about THIS COMMISSIONER:
Gary Eddings, Jr. serves the Weakley County Commission as a representative of the 4th District. He was appointed in May 2017 to fill a vacancy and was elected to continue his service as commissioner during the May 1st, 2018 primary election.
A native of Sharon, Eddings has worked in public service since 1987 when he began a career with the Weakley County Municipal Electric System, where he serves as both an engineer and a lineman. He received his post-secondary education and training from Walters State Community College, Dyersburg State Community College, and Nashville State Technical College.
In addition to his work with WCMES, Eddings’ responsibilities throughout the county focus on safety and first response.
Eddings joined the Sharon Fire Department in 2002 and has served the department as fire chief since 2009. Additionally he served the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department as a part-time deputy 20 years. Eddings is currently the Police Chief in the City of Sharon since 2023. Eddings earned an AEMT license and has served the county as a first responder.
Eddings serves as co-chairman of the Weakley County Fire Chiefs Association and has served as co-chairman of the Weakley County Prevention Coalition, for which he currently serves as the Law Enforcement Liaison. He is the former Chairman of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) for Weakley County and is an adjunct instructor at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy in Nashville. Eddings is also a board member at the Weakley County Government Employees Credit Union.
Eddings is instrumental in community education on safety, offering training for local fire departments and involving the Sharon Fire Department in both school and community functions. He is certified in instruction on DUI, Taser usage, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, CPR/AED, and Emergency Vehicle Driving. Eddings also assists with various fundraisers and volunteer efforts in the county, including the Weakley County Backpack Program.
He has received a variety of honors throughout his career in public service, including “Officer of the Year” in 2013 for West Tennessee and the “First Responder of the Year” in 2008 from Gov. Bredesen. An active member of Central Baptist Church. Eddings serves as the Chaplin at the Dresden Elk's Lodge.
