Larry W. Taylor was elected as commissioner for the 5th district August 2006. He previously served as a member of the Weakley County Quarterly Court filling an unexpired term for the period of 1976 through 1978.
Taylor retired in 2004, after working 37 years as a auditor and audit manager for West Tennessee with the Division of County audit of the Tennessee State Comptroller's office. During this time, he was provided with the unique perspective of county government. His job responsibilities required him to work daily with all county elected and appointed officials in the accounting, budgeting and purchasing aspects of their offices. While working with the state Taylor obtained the following certifications: Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and a member of the Association of Government Accountants and the Tennessee Government Finance Officers Association.
Commissioner Taylor served 16 years in city government. First being elected alderman for the City of Martin, TN from 1986-1992. He was elected Mayor of Martin, a part time position, in 1992 and served until 2002. During his tenure as Martin Mayor he served on the Regional Planning Commission, Economic & Community Development Board, Finance Committee and Weakley County Chamber of Commerce. He served as President of the West Tennessee Mayor's Association in 2001.
Commissioner Taylor serves on the County Commissioner's Finance, Ways, and Means Committee, Financial Management Committee, Weakley County Nursing Home Committee, Ethics Committee, and serves as Chairperson of the Audit Committee.
Since his retirement in 2004, Taylor has worked as an affiliate real estate broker with Fuller Partners Real Estate in Martin.
Taylor graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and served in the United States Air Force from January 1963 until September 1966. He is a member of the Martin Masonic Lodge #551, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of Central Baptist Church.
Commissioner Taylor and his wife Pat reside at 137 Forest Drive in Martin. They are the parents of two daughters, Leigh Nanney (Phil) of Paris and Lynn Vincent (Matt) of Martin. They have four grandchildren, Drake and Katie Vincent and Taylor Beth and Emily Jewell Nanney.
